Single mum Catherine McCluskey’s body was discovered lying in the middle of Prospecthill Road in the city’s southside in July 1950.
At first her death was deemed to be a tragic accident until the post mortem revealed her injuries were consistent with a beating. Her killer had run her over to make it look like she’d been the victim of a hit and run.
That killer was revealed to be serving police officer James Robertson who was married but had been seeing Catherine in secret.
It took a jury just over an hour to find him guilty of beating Catherine unconscious then deliberately running over her again and again in his car.
On December 16, 1950, at Barlinnie Prison, Albert Pierrepoint made Scottish legal history when he hanged Robertson.
PC James Robertson was the only serving policeman to be executed for a crime committed while on duty.
Armed and masked the gang burst into Securitas’ Aberdeen Altens depot through the roof as unsuspecting staff sat reading Christmas cards.
Terrified staff were forced at gunpoint to lie on the ground while the balaclava-clad raiders helped themselves to cash intended for bank teller machines.
One member of staff locked himself in the control room and tried to call for help by activating an alarm but one of the robbers threatened to shoot one of his colleagues if he didn’t open up.
Carried out with “military precision” the gang made of with £1.2million following the raid on 3 December 1998.
Their getaway vehicles were later found burnt out.
Despite appeals on Crimewatch and national media detectives drew a blank in their hunt for the gang.
Twenty-two years later none of the six men involved have been traced. Neither has the money.
