My Poetry. Down and out Worldwide.
It's drawing near to that time of year,
when the bitter cold begins to truly bite.
The lonely winds are howling all around,
while you are safely tucked in for the night.

Let's think of the many who are homeless,
struggling desperately to find some heat,
scared of sleeping rough in the darkness,
and often facing danger on the street.

Though some may seek to take advantage,
and try to make a quick, dishonest 'buck,'
we know there are so many honest people
who are simply suffering, down on their luck.

So if you find you can spare a simple sandwich,
or if a warm blanket would be great,
perhaps even spare some crucial dog food
for their loyal companion who may not have ate.

Please spare a genuine thought for someone else,
in this selfish, increasingly unkind age,
when it seems all you read about these days
is cruelty, injustice, and burning rage.

When you are sitting in your cosy, warm home,
just after finishing a wholesome, full meal,
close your eyes and truly imagine the cold out there,
and try to understand how the Homeless feel.

Remember your own deep human connection,
and let your compassion be instantly stirred;
for a small act of kindness in the darkness
is the greatest, most sincere, powerful word.
