Alford in Aberdeenshire is the centre of an agricultural area. Formerly it held cattle markets and fairs. Today it still supports the local agricultural community but is also a popular with oil workers.

In this type of small town, the population comprises families with a higher proportion of adults in the 25–44 age grouping. Higher rates of full time employment are found. 

Alford is an interdependent to independent town.
