Born in 1274, Robert the Bruce became King of Scotland in 1306 and went on to defeat Edward II’s armies at Bannockburn in 1314. He died in 1329.

Answering this got me curious about the use of ‘The’ as an honourific. I discovered that the most famous Robert was the eighth and that the honourific was the result of linguistic transition from French ‘de’ to English ‘the’. There’s a deep irony in the origin of ‘the’ in his name being an anglicisation!
