In the Scots language what does it mean to ‘haver’?

  1. Talk profoundly?
  2. To Boast?
  3. To brood in silence?

The correct answer is Talk nonsense In spite of its popularity among Scots speakers today, haver or haiver is a relative newcomer to the language, the earliest quotation in the Dictionary of the Scots Language dating from as late as 1776.

  1. I reckon I’ve come across ‘haver’ before – maybe in a Rebus book because I’ve read a few. But not having bothered to look up the meaning at the time, I’m guessing talking nonsense.
